I have received quite a few emails in the past two weeks with questions about exactly what I am doing here at Kachhwa Christian Hospital. It is encouraging to hear from you all and hear of your excitement for what God is doing in my life. When I first came to KCH I had no idea what I would be doing, I just came willing to help in whatever way possible. So far, most of my time has been spent either learning or teaching. Every morning I go to the hospital and follow the doctor around trying to understand what the patients are saying in Hindi. Dr. Blessy has been helping me learn Hindi and gain more exposure to the medical field. She is finishing up her two year contract here in March and will be leaving soon after I do. The patients are very upset to hear that she is leaving. I am excited to see what God will do through her next! Through the time spent at the hospital I have had the opportunity to watch two cataract surgeries, see several wounds get sutured up and take lots of blood pressures. Today I saw a lady give birth and learned how to give an injection. It is quite a learning experience hanging out with a doctor all of the time. In the afternoons I hang out with a literacy worker. I am teaching her guitar and basic computer skills and she is teaching me to read and write in Hindi script and to knit. It is fun to be able to share our skills like this. Soon I will start meeting with a Hindi tutor so I can learn Hindi grammar! When school gets out in around 4:00 I head over to the English classes and help Joseph teach two classes of kids from the surrounding community. The kids are a blast and try so hard to communicate with me. I think the fact that I can't speak or understand Hindi makes them even more motivated to learn English. In the evenings, some of the staff gather in the Abrahams' house (where I am staying at the moment) and eat together, talk and watch movies or the History Channel. It is a great way to relax. There have been several typing jobs also assigned to me. I work on these in my free time, which I don't have much of. It is amazing how excited they were when they heard I knew how to use a computer. It is strange to think that most people on campus here don't know how to use a computer. I am glad that all of those hours I spent chatting with my friends online finally pays off with the typing speed I have gained. There are several other ladies on staff here and I have had a really good time getting to know them. We have had some very challenging and encouraging times together. I feel very accepted and will miss them all terribly when I leave. We meet three evenings or more a week for Bible study, prayer and worship. It is so great to have this kind of community in a place where we are all working toward the same goal of glorifying God and making it possible for more people in India to learn about Him. There is always some kind of group training or conference going on at the campus here. Last week over 300 kids from the villages were here with their teachers for a Republic Day celebration. They were here for two whole days and spent the entire time competing in sports and talent competitions. It was amazing to see them all working so hard and having a blast. They were all from schools that have been started through Kachhwa Christian Hospital. The day after they left, a mission organization had a training week here. About 300 house church leaders were here for Bible training during that time! This community is making such a difference in the surrounding area. I am so honored to be here. Thank you so much for all of your prayers and encouragement! Love and prayers for you all! |
